What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils in cosmetic and beauty treatments. The plants we use in aromatherapy have been used in healing and beauty treatments for thousands of years. Originally the earliest people would have exploited the plants abilities to heal wounds by rubbing the plants on their bodies. This action released the plants essential oils onto the skin.
It has been very well documented that the Egyptians used plant extracts as both perfume and as beauty treatments. Some oils have been found in the pyramids and tombs of the ancient Egyptians and these oils were often used to embalm the bodies of the mummies. The Egyptians made many ointments and pastes from a wide variety of plants and trees. The ancient Greeks learned from the Egyptians and added to that knowledge. In particular, they discovered that the perfumes from flowers when inhaled had distinctive but varied effects. For example oils could be refreshing, stimulating or relaxing.
The modern idea of aromatherapy has only really developed in the last century.
A Frenchman, R. Grassfosse, first used the word aromatherapy in 1928. He researched extensively into essential oils and their use. This work was further explored by Dr. Jean Valnet.

How Does Aromatherapy Work?
Essential oils have many therapeutic properties: this is due to their chemical composition, which is extremely complex and therefore impossible to reproduce synthetically. In particular, some essential oils have over 300 constituents, not all of which have been identified.
The essential oils themselves work because their molecules are small enough to penetrate deep into the skin. They are carried still further, through the tiny capillaries present in the skin. They can therefore penetrate to all layers, not just the upper layers of the epidermis. This is important as the upper layers of the skin, which is the area most products work on, consists of dead skin cells which are shed very quickly. This limits the effectiveness of many cosmetics, as their effects are short-term.
The essential oils properties vary from oil to oil depending on their composition. They can however, be blended to bring a combination of benefits to the product. Blends of oils are widely used in aromatherapy products, as a few oils carefully blended are more effective than individual oils.
What are the advantages?
Because essential oils have the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin than other cosmetics, it means the improvements to the skin will be longer lasting and more effective. The effects of the products will depend on what the product is designed to do. Some oils that are believed to be useful in slowing down ageing, do so by promoting cell growth within the skin as well as improving the look of the skin. The oils can also help to increase localised circulation. This can be extremely helpful for leg products, which can help with oedema, fatigue and cellulite.
